Spring Maintenance
Scarification & Aeration
Spring is the ideal time to scarify & aerate lawns, as this will improve the air flow and water infiltration to the soil, thereby increasing oxygen and aiding nutrient uptake from the soil, helping to prevent potential problems later in the year with fungal disease and the like. Before aerating, remove any dead leaves, moss and thatch using a garden rake such as our polypropylene 32 or 48 prong (see Sundries & Accessories), available from stock. Ideally, aeration should be done with a core aerator or special fork with hollow tines, both of which remove small sections of soil, although spiking the lawn with a garden fork may be sufficient for small areas. Larger areas may benefit from using a petrol powered lawn aerator, which can be hired by the day. If you would be interested in using one of these to do the hard work, give us a call and we will recommend a good local supplier. Horticultural Grit & Sand is available from stock in 25kg bags, and is ideal for brushing into the aeration hollows to aid drainage.
Top Dressing
As well as top-dressing lawns in autumn, it can also be beneficial in spring to even out the lawn after the extreme conditions of winter. Our Top Dressing is available in dumpy bags, one of which is sufficient to cover 150m².
Seed
In addition to top-dressing, some lawns may benefit from over-seeding, particularly after the rigours of winter. We can supply seed for all types of lawns. Those in a shady location, for example, will benefit from an application of our Bar Shade, while those competing with other plants for nutrients may perform better with a strong mix such as Bar Extreme or Bar Stadia. The most popular seeds are available from stock, and can be sold by the kilo, while all others are available to order in larger bags.
Mowing
Now is the time to get the mower out from its winter hibernation, and for the first cut of the year, the mowing height needs to be set high so as not to stress the lawn. The cut height can be gradually reduced to 35mm as the year progresses, depending on the weather conditions at the time.
Summer Containers & Bedding
Spring is, of course, the time for planting summer containers and bedding, and we can supply 0-8mm Organic Compost in dumpy bags, as well as different composts including Mushroom, Horse & Peat for other areas of the garden.
Very wet soil will benefit from a layer of our Horticultural Grit at the bottom of the planting hole to aid drainage.
Newly planted hedges & plants need to be protected from the elements, and our Windbreak Fencing (see Sundries & Accessories) is sold in rolls or by the square metre.
