Lawn Care Instructions
Preparation
-
Ensure the soil is weed free.
-
Treatment with a Glyphosate based weed-killer (systemic herbicide) on the ground prior to cultivation will remove any weeds present and help prevent re-growth.
-
Cultivate the ground removing stones larger than 15mm (0.6”). Any remaining smaller stones will aid drainage.
-
Rake level, tread firmly, and rake again. The ground can be considered well prepared when a trodden shoe makes a mark but does not sink into the soil.
-
Water lightly immediately before laying.
-
Apply a dressing of our balanced fertiliser, which will aid root establishment.
Laying & Jointing
-
For best results, lay the turfs from planks to prevent dents in the lawn and aid consolidation of turf into soil as you lay.
-
Lay the edges of borders first, like a big frame. This ensures the edge has a full width of turf, preventing the edges drying out.
-
Lay turf in alternate directions in a staggered bond, making sure each joint is pulled into the next. This makes for a tidy job and prevents the need for loaming the joint (provided the turf is not allowed to dry out).
-
Do not skimp! Laying little bits to finish the job will only dry out and ruin the finish. When ordering, it is a good idea to allow 5% for cuts on a square lawn, and 10% for an irregular shape lawn. Any spare can be stacked in rolls and make lovely soil.
Watering
-
This is possibly the most important contribution you can make to aid establishment of a new lawn, particularly the edges which are more prone to drying out.
-
Ensure the turf is watered (soaked) after laying.
-
Keep turf moist at all times, especially in the first month after laying. In dry spells, watering every day is essential.
-
Ensure watering is done at the start or end of the day, avoiding direct sunlight which may scorch the turf.
-
Avoid walking on turf during rain or after watering to prevent divots whilst establishing.
Mowing
-
Freshly laid lawns will require cutting after about 3 weeks or when the length has reached 3” (7.6cm). Please do not be in a hurry to cut, let turf settle and take root for about a month.
-
When mowing, cut and maintain between 1.5” to 2” (3.8cm to 5cm). Although the cut height may be reduced to approx 0.5” (1.3cm), longer is recommended to maintain the micro climate at the base of the sward.
Weeding & Feeding
-
Your new turf will generally arrive free of weeds, but some are always lurking in the under-soil.
-
It is preferable not to use chemical weed-killers on new turf for about 6 months.
-
Apply a further dressing of our balanced fertiliser.
General
-
Most lawns may be lightly used after a month. However, please be aware that while your newly turfed lawn may look established, it is still juvenile. Over a period of a year, take care to feed and water regularly, mowing no lower than 1.5” (3.8cm), and take care to only use the lawn lightly.
Enjoy your new lawn!
