For healthy lawns and plants, fertiliser is an important addition, especially during spring growth - but what are fertilisers made of?
All fertilisers (or fertilizers) come with with an NPK ratio (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) which tells you how much of each of these important nutrients are present in the feed.
Nitrogen is the first on the list for a reason. It is vital for any plant's development during it's early growth states by aiding in the formation of amino acids, which then form proteins, which create the physical structure of the plant. This is what makes the plant look green, as well as growing healthy, tall and strong.
Nitrogen is also an important part of the make up of chlorophyll - the pigment that makes the plant look green. Without chlorophyll, the plant will struggle to capture enough sunlight in order to turn it into energy and will ultimately starve.
How does Nitrogen help with your lawn care?
With the extremely wet weather we've been having, disease in lawns in an extremely high possibility, including problems like red thread disease. Using a high nitrogen fertiliser will help keep these types of diseases at bay, helping to build your lawn's resistance.
When should you use a High Nitrogen Fertiliser?
High Nitrogen fertilisers shouldn't be applied too early in the season, or on very young plants (or turf that is not yet established). This is because an excess could essentially burn the roots and potentially kill the plant.
It is perfect to use, however, on an established lawn or plants in late spring/early summer when they are in their main growth stage. At this point it will quickly use all the nitrogen without any risk to the roots.
Why should you use a dry/granular fertiliser?
Dry fertilisers are excellent for releasing nutrients at a slower, more controlled rate, meaning there is a lower risk of the roots burning. The granules break down over a longer period of time, or are consumed by microorganisms, making it easier to control how much the plants get.
