Turf is sold in one-square-metre rolls, so the calculator turns your length and width into a roll count, adds a margin for wastage, and gives you the topsoil quantity to level the ground underneath. How to use the calculator
Measure the length and width of the area in metres and enter them, and the calculator returns the square metres and the rolls of turf to order. For a square or rectangular lawn, one measurement of each side is enough. For an irregular shape, split it into rectangles, work out each one, and add them together. Measure across the widest points, and allow 5 to 10% for wastage so curves, edges and trimming are covered. Turf cannot be refunded once cut, so a small margin is safer than falling short.

Topsoil coverage at a glance
Topsoil quantity depends on the depth you are building, so the calculator uses your area and depth to give bags or tonnes. As a reference, one tonne covers about 15m² at 50mm, and a bulk bag holds 0.73m³.

Order the soil ahead of the turf. The ground wants to be levelled, raked and firmed before the rolls land, because turf is cut to order and should be laid the day it arrives. Check your postcode on the delivery information page when you book the dates.
Frequently asked questions
How many rolls of turf do I need?
One roll per square metre, plus 5 to 10% for wastage. A 50m² lawn needs about 54 rolls once a 7% margin is added. The calculator works it out from your measurements.
How do I calculate an irregular lawn?
Split the shape into rectangles, calculate each one, and add them together. Measure across the widest points, and call the office if a shape is hard to break down.
How much wastage should I allow?
Between 5 and 10%. This covers curved edges, shaping and trimming. Turf cannot be refunded once cut, so a small margin avoids running short on the day.
Does the calculator cover topsoil too?
Yes. Enter the area and depth and it returns the topsoil in bags or tonnes, using about 15m² per tonne at 50mm as the working figure.
What size is a roll of turf?
About 170cm by 59cm, which covers one square metre, on a soil bed of roughly one inch. Weight ranges from about 15kg to 30kg depending on the season.
